We have seen a significant increase in the number of Firearms Identification Card and Permit to Purchase a Handgun applications over the past several weeks. Although Firearms Dealers have been allowed to reopen effective today, and our Detective Unit is still checking the applicant’s personal references and other localized background checks, there are several things that may significantly delay your applications:
- The New Jersey contracted fingerprint sites have been deemed non-essential and therefore are closed. No appointments are being scheduled for initial Firearms Identification Card application fingerprints. This means that initial applications will be delayed indefinitely.
- Criminal History checks and Mental Health checks are “experiencing delays.” We are being advised that they are still taking place but at an extremely reduced pace. Keep in mind that these checks are conducted by agencies outside of the Logan Township Police Department so when they resume in their full capacity is beyond our span of control.
While this information does not provide a definitive timeline on when Firearms Identification Cards and Permits to Purchase a Handgun will be issued again, we wanted to give our residents information on why these applications are being delayed.
