The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office will be distributing a $24,000 state grant to 13 municipal police departments, including the Logan Township Police Department,  for extra patrols and checkpoints specifically targeting motor vehicle seat belt compliance in the weeks leading up to the heavily-trafficked Memorial Day weekend.

Police departments in Glassboro, Pitman, Westville and  Harrison, Deptford, Mantua, Monroe, Washington, Elk, Greenwich, Logan and Woolwich townships will receive funds for the annual “Click it or Ticket” program.

“These funds are best used increasing enforcement of our traffic laws,”  said Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton.  “We appreciate the work being done by these local police departments in helping to make our roadways safer.”

“Click it or Ticket” operations, accompanied by a publicity campaign about seat belt safety, will run from May 19 through June 1.

“Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, which allocates the enforcement funds. “In 2010 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 12,546 lives nationwide.”

New Jersey’s goal this year is to increase front seat belt usage from the current 91% on surveys to 92%, Poedubicky said.  The campaign will focus on rear-seat passengers as well, where usage among adults is just 44 percent, he said.

With 422 police agencies participating in 2013, 26,049 seat belt citations and 4,895 speeding summonses were issued and 860 motorists were arrested.
